Central Heating Not Working? A Troubleshooting Guide

Common Reasons Your Central Heating Isn't Working

There are many reasons your central heating might stop working properly. Some are simple fixes you can handle yourself, while others require a qualified heating engineer. Here's how to diagnose the problem.

1. Check Your Thermostat

It sounds obvious, but the first thing to check is your thermostat settings. Make sure it's set to a temperature higher than the current room temperature, the timer/programmer is set correctly, and the batteries haven't died (for wireless thermostats). Try turning the thermostat up to its maximum setting temporarily to see if the boiler fires up.

2. Check Your Boiler Pressure

Check your boiler's pressure gauge. For most systems, the ideal pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it's below 1 bar, your system may need repressurising. Consult your boiler manual for instructions on how to top up the pressure using the filling loop.

If you're losing pressure repeatedly, you may have a leak somewhere in the system — call FlowFix Pro for a thorough inspection.

3. Bleed Your Radiators

If your radiators are hot at the bottom but cold at the top, trapped air is likely the culprit. Use a radiator key to bleed the air out. Turn off your heating first, hold a cloth under the bleed valve, and open it slowly until water starts to come out, then close it. Remember to check your boiler pressure after bleeding radiators, as it may drop.

4. Check for a Frozen Condensate Pipe

In cold weather, the condensate pipe (which runs from your boiler to an outside drain) can freeze. This causes the boiler to shut down and display an error code. You can often thaw it by pouring warm (not boiling) water over the frozen section of the pipe.

5. Power Flush Your System

Over time, sludge and debris can build up in your central heating system, reducing efficiency and causing cold spots. A power flush is a professional deep-cleaning process that removes this build-up and can dramatically improve your heating performance.

FlowFix Pro offers professional power flush services across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and all our service areas. It's one of the most cost-effective ways to restore your heating system's performance.

When to Call a Professional

If you've tried the above steps and your heating still isn't working, it's time to call a qualified heating engineer. Issues such as faulty pumps, motorised valves, diverter valves, and PCB faults require professional diagnosis and repair.

FlowFix Pro's TSSA licensed heating technicians can diagnose and fix any central heating problem. We're available 24/7 for emergencies and carry a comprehensive range of parts for most boiler brands.
